Anyone know in the Fargo area or on-line where "towtector" style rock guards can be purchased at a reasonable price?? Anyone know of any used ones for sale?? Looking for a big mustache for the back of my truck to keep my trailer looking decent. 2 years ago the cheap version was $99, now the same one is $159.
I can't help ya on that. I just know I need one now because Mountrail County roads are a complete mess and there is a lot of gravel to many areas I like to fish (dang east enderes...).
If I come across something I will let you know. One for me has been put on top of the Christmas list. So if any of you run into my siblings, my girlfriend, or my parents let them know that you "heard" Tim wants a Towtector.
I built a rock guard this summer. I used 2 x 1in box tubing and cut a notch in the tubing so it would straddle my ball hitch. I then found that I had a slight engineering flaw. The box tubing blocked my wiring harness. To fix this I cut another notch with the plasma cutter and reinforced the bottom with some tempered 1in x 1/4 in steel. As for the flaps, I bought some pickup box liner and secured it to the box tubing. I measured a number of buddies and found that their instructions reccomend to allow 5 inches of clearence. I think it works fine. If I were to buy on I would go with a tow-tector.

I had done much the same thing using implement belting material. Unfortunately someone tagged mine and I now have a unibrow mudflap. Need to replace now and instead of fixing this one new purchase makes more sense. Mine was pretty sweet, the 2 flaps were removable with simple pins. That was if you didnt want the flaps on you just had the receiver with a 14 inch "T" of square tubing mounted to the top of the draw bar....acted like a step. The flaps were on square tubing 1 size smaller and slid into the middle peice from the outside. If I had to do it over again Id go MUCh heavier with the material, couldnt stand on the outer 2/3 or so and it would have been a nice feature.
Problem with that vs the mustache is many of the rocks just bounce off and back up into the trailer. The brushes catch/slow the rocks much better.
my dad just bought a new camper and i told him this needs to be a purchase soon. you don't want to spend 40k on something and have it full of rock chips and whatnot right away.
I had made one as well out of rubber matts I bought at Menards. It seemed to work fine. I got a newer truck and installed premolded mud flaps on it, but still used the full width protector I made until I did a little mpg experiment and discovered I was losing better than a mpg with it installed. I would definitely go with the brush style if I did it again.
Ya, a guy could definitely build one. I have all the gadgets at my disposal with welders, chop saws, etc, etc, etc. By the time I buy the materials, design, re-design, build, rebuild and make it look nice I will have much more time and money wrapped into it than I would just going out and buying. Opportunity cost also comes to mind!!!

Does anyone use the brush type with the newer duramax with the rear exit exhaust. I put on an old one I had that wasn't wide enough for the dually I traded for and it melted the crap out of the brushes. I ordered one now with the rubber flaps and a hole for the exhaust to go through.
Eyes, I believe it's a Towtector. It's the brush style. The brush on the exhaust side had some melting. Not bad, but noticeable. $50.00 and it's yours. I also have the wall mount holder for it.
Mt rock knockers look bulky, but awesome for lots of gravel traveled roads. If I lived more remote Id get an ugly galvenized trailer and the MT rock knocker.
Luveyes, they make aluminum trailers now days, which hold up better then the galvanized and look a whole lot prettier! Although. they probably cost a whole lot more too!
Damn, if someone else had one they would sell for $50 or so I wouldn't hesitate! Gonefshn, I sure wish you had two of them, ha ha!
Just like Tim said, I have all the tools at my disposal and have been going to make one for about two year now and still haven't done it, I guess it comes down to prioritizing my time, which is Family, Work, Honeydo List, Fishin/Huntin, and then otherstuff. Seems I never quite make to "otherstuff" espoecially with fishin/hunin ahead of it, lol!
What I should do is just get my boat trailer rino lined or whatever. To the heck with paint!
But the bow of the boat still takes chips so I gotta get one before too long. Gravel roads I don't mind but I drive down them at 25 to 30 mph and that takes FOREVER. Although, on many roads out west, you can't go much over 25 anyway!
