Supporting members?

What are everyones thoughts about having a "supporting members" section on FBO similar to what NoDak does? Pros/Cons?

Personally, since this is an advertising driven site I like to think I do my fair share of supporting it already as often as I surf on in.

I hear what your saying allen but I feel most of jackasses won't pay the $.  May actually have some good topics without morons piping in.

So you're thinking the entire site would become a pay site, or just  a paying member section of the current site?

Seems to me FBO actually had this years ago and it kind of flopped.  There just wasn't enough material to continue justifying the measly $20/year fee.  The thing is people weren't willing to put up any better or more reports on the subscriber side than they were the free side. 

I don't recall if there were any significant differences between the pay side for discussions but I suspect not.

Besides, there are lots of times on FBO where lurkers who wouldn't go through the hassle of paying $20 see a topic in their expertise and weigh in on it.  I wouldn't want to exclude them.


All that being said, I gotta believe that Timmers and the owners are always open to any idea that boosts revenue.

Create a section of the site where only people who think alike can hang out together and talk about thinking alike?
 
Sounds like there would be great progress in that area. I have learned many things here at FBO, even from people who don't think like me.

Maybe we just respect others thoughts and opinions even if they difffer from ours.

I'd guess there would still be some "jackasses" or "morons" or "lurkers" "piping" in.   Some on here might  think that someone that would want to exclude someones opinion, simply because they may not agree with them might fall under one of these catagories themselves. If you can't handle someone disagreeing with your opinion, you might want to stay off internet chat sites.

It used to be on here. And never really did any thing I sent my Dues in one year for really nothing. No real benifit

There are two types of supporting member platforms.  There are the supporting members who could offer $10 or something membership (just a paid SUPPORTING member).  The benefit could maybe be a T-shirt or something.  The remainder of the membership fee would go toward site enhancement and/or maybe a chunk to a choice of your outdoor charity.

The other type is having some sort of paid membership where you got more site features.  The thing is, this use to be the norm back in the day.  But sites figured out quickly that you get more page views and everything to just offer everything free.

At this moment, there has been no discussion to offer a site benefit toward some sort of fee.  I do not know what Nodak does or what their benefits are.  Personally, I'd be more in favor of having a supporting member section where you donate a certain amount, receive a kick back like a shirt or something, get a nice little "gold member" or some type of notification next to your member name and then maybe have a few choices where you could donate a chunk of your membership to another entity or something.

Anyway, that's my quick thought on it.  I'm sure I could think of something a little more attractive if I were to sit and discuss it with the folks behind the scenes.

Well said, I was thinking the same thing myself! Maybe there could be a special login feature for the "Pro's" that know everything, then another login for just regular guys who wanted to discuss and look at things from others perspective. Of course the login would have to be a lot simpler for the regular guys than the pros because obviously they aren't as smart.

I actually liked the supporting membership feature on the old site.  I actually did share more detailed fishing reports in the members area.  As many of you may notice, I do not post much on the fishing reports section.  Nothing against any FBO members.  I will share any info I have with any one of you.  I just hate sitting in the local watering hole listening to people (who I know have never EVER made a single post on FBO) talk about how they really hammered the perch on Lake XX thanks to a report on fishing buddy.  I know several people (non-members) who look at the fishing reports page the first thing every morning.  I really have a problem giving these trolls any info.  Just my 2 cents.

gst, bohunting (regular guy!) it was simply an opinion question about the supporting member idea.  I didn't say anything about not wanting other peoples opinions on other topics.  A perfect example is the "pumpkins" post a few days ago where a member asked if anyone had any leftover pumpkins and right away some 'meatball" had to run his mouth about baiting when he had no idea what the pumpkins were for.

I kinda thought the fella with the comment on the pumkin thread was a bit opinionated, but a moron??? Being kinda new to this online chat stuff and this site, I'm wondering, how do you determine who are the "jackasses" and "morons" or "lurkers" on this site?

gst you can base those questions off of Jiffy's posts. Anywho another site I go to they have a donation deal but they send you a T shirt for a twenty dollar donation. But when there was supporting membership on this site and NDoutdoors the content in the "pro" area was not any better or lacked if you ask me then that of the general public. Just my two cents but I would also pay for the supporting membership just because I use this site so much.
