Looking at a couple different 223 bolt guns to add to the collection that a guy i know has for sale. Both are heavy barrels which is fine because i will typically use it for bench shooting or prarie dogs so wont be carrying it for any kind of major distance. The remington 700 has a 24" barrel and the winchester 70 has a 22" barrel. Both have decent triggers both are used and in similar condition. The winchester is a few years old so it was when they were still built in the U.S. I have shot many different calibers in remington 700s and many different calibers in some older pre 64 winchester model 70s.

So any opinons out there?

Winchesters are still built in the US.  They're now built in SC instead of CT.  They're under the Browning umbrella (BACO, Browining Arms Co) which in the US is based out of SLC.  Their (BACO/Win) parent company is FN Herstal based in Belgium.

If the Win is truely 22" it's been shortened.  Their heavy bbl models were either 24" or 26" depending on model and production yr.  The Remington being 24" is one of the older BDL wood stocked models, even if it's in a synthetic it orginally came in a wood stock.  No flies on either, both are push feed, plunger ejector in the bolt face and spring clip extractor also in the bolt face/lug area so feeding/functioning will be essentially the same.  Given their age, both will have what is, IMO, a better adjustable trigger than you can currently obtain in a factory rifle.  Pick one, have it bedded if it isn't already and shoot it a bunch.

Impartial information is tough to come by.  Most print media is all about the commercial/coprorate payer, not the reader.  Some websites offer good info, the trick is separating info from BS, and separating what you or a poster wants to be true, from what actually is truth.  I can't really nail down any really good impartial sources.  The Blue Book of Gun values is fairly impartial but one must realize that there are regional pricing discrepancies, so that's not always gospel truth either.  Sierra and Hornady reloading manuals both have what I consider very good preface and historical information for each caliber they list reloading info for IMO.

For the original poster, make certain you're measuring barrel length all the way back to the hole in the receiver/action that's meant as a gas release, not just to the receiver/bbl junction as that's how bbl length is measured and listed by the manufacturers.  That Winchester you listed as 22" could very well be considered a 24" bbl by industry standards if measured in this manner.  That also would mean it probably hadn't been shortened.

If they're both 223, buy them both.  A guy can never have too many 223's!!  All that performance for less than it costs to shoot a 22mag or 17 hummer.  What's not to like?

Is the winchester a true win or a usra I have 20 plus winchesters and the new they are the worse the are for feeding from the mag the trigger if factory on the win is very much the same trigger as they put in the guns made in the 60's the remington if factory could have come with a syn stock i have one the remington made a special run of for  bill hicks in MN. and unless it is very old there were some late 80 on sps type runs on a limited bases I have a Winchester in a 22-250 deluxe heavy barrel made in the late 70's that shoots super nice also have one in the sporter model same thing then i bought a coyote this gun is not even close to the older models but like the man says buy them both and pass them on to the next generation  i collect winchesters but for the most part shoot remingtons of the pre x trigger era.

24" Varmint Synthetic in 223?  Possible I guess but all the heavy bbl 223's from Rem I've seen are 1:12" 26" or 1:9" 20", and the PSS 1:9" 26".  Every 24" Rem 223 Heavy bbl I've seen was one of the older wood stocked BLD Varmint modles.

dont remember how many of these were made or if they were made for anyone but billhicks but mine is a special run tactical made late 80's or early 90's  I bought straight from Bill hicks for my own collection  thats back when bill hicks did a lot of special runs in a agreement they had with remington kinda miss that also have a tactical in SS chambered in the 220 swift  they offerd before there was a vssf  model it was a run of 500 i believe none of these guns ever show up on remingtons production history and normally they were runs of 200 to 500 and when they were gone they were gone
