After the fracking thread that turned into a Prius bash by me I thought I'd keep track for a week just so folk didn't think I was being unfair.

Last week I drove from Fargo, ND to Butte, MT and back, plus a 40mi detour on a secondary blacktop road to visit a friend for a little bit.

On the Interstates 94/90 I ran 80MPH with the cruise set, I drive generally within 5MPH of the speed limit in town.  Last Wed am it snowed in Billings so from Billings to Boze I ran 60-70MPH, no cruise.  Between Billings and Butte I drove just shy of 50mi in town.  I ran 60-70MPH on the secondary highway for 80mi round-trip depending on whom I had to follow.  The total for the trip was a little over 1800mi.  Via the Junkmobile's supercomputer I got 36MPG even for the entire trip.  The best mileage leg was from Butte to Billings were I averaged 37.5MPH.  The worst was from Belfield to Billings where I averaged just a bit over 32MPG.

Fargo to Sioux Falls and back today, 480mi, 34MPH @ 80mph.

It is truly a Prius of Junk!!

Kind of sad when a person thinks about it. I had an 87 Nissan Sentra with a 5 speed manual tranny that I put 30k on after I bought it with well over 200k. That thing got a minimum of 34 mpg on average and on long trips got 42 to 44 mpg after I had 5th gear fixed, before that I ran it as a 4 speed.

Progress, I guess. :( And before that I had an 83 Merc Cougar that regularly got between 24 and 30 on the highway. More I think about it the less I like the direction of our new fuel economy standards.

Mine gets 46 in winter with about the same trip. 48 in summer. I think you got a bad one or a bent rear axle. I bent a rear axle after a flat tire and my mileage went way down.

Ha ha, you bent an axle on a flat tire.  Sorry, I thought that was pretty darn funny.

In all fairness, I'm running Blizzaks on all four corners and that's robbed 2-3MPG vs. a more traditional tire.

It was a bad flat...I almost lost control...it sucks to change a flat in Billings in the rain during rush hour. Couldn't feel the axle but ruined a tire ine 3000 miles. Tires are cheap though. It was kind of funny though.

Who cares what mileage you get.  You are saving the mother earth by "Going Green"!
Just curious.   Sounds like you really hate this car.   What if someone "stole" it?

Horsager, I thought about you the other day and my wife and I even spoke of you! Were your ears ringing?? .
My wife and I drove to Fargo at 75 - 80 all the way. We had a tail wind (ATIS along the way JMS and FAR about 290 @ 10 - not much but a bit) but we got , you ready?, 52.3 mph! I thought of taking a picture of it for you but camera was in my suitcase and you and the anti-progress righties would only say it was photo shopped anyway. But we laughed and laughed about it, and at you, even though my wife has never met you!
.
Going back a few days later, the wind almost exactly the same (checked with FAR and JMS ATIS, the Jms automated as we drove along) because of the head wind we turned in only 43.2 right up to our door. I accidently filled with ethanol on the way back, which might have dropped it a bit.
I told my wife about your reported experiences with your Prius. She said "Huh? His car must be tuned wrong or something, or he must drive 100mph. Both my friends that have them average about 45. No interior heat?? Something's wrong! Not big enough for him? Is he way overweight or something?" Must be because Mr. XYZ drove ours, loved it and just bought one (he's 6 - 7 and 260 pounds - not overweight for his height, just a big solid guy!)

Now that our Prius is getting old, 6 years old and over 200K, I hope the next one (waiting for the Prius 5) gets as good as the present one. I'll let you know, though. And as always, I'll report honestly! Kind of hate to trade it on the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it' principle!

The highest we could remember was 63mpg, from Great Falls to Billings, a few years ago in winter over that pass, averaging about 55 - 60, then faster once on the level stuff past the pass. The worst we ever got, into a 45mph wind with two bicycles on the back destroying the streamlining, was around 35. Very rare to get under 40, but occasionally, especially into the wind with bikes or Kayaks on it.

Just called my firend who drove ours then bought one for himself a couple years ago- just got off the phone - says he averages 45 - 50 all the time, only once below 40 and half the time over 50, but he doesn't have a heavy foot at all., Accelerates gently, drives the speed limit, etc.

I think your hatred of the Prius is 1% substance and 99% "hate-anything-anyone-could-consider-green-or-progressive!" Simple as that. Or maybe just trying to stir the pot....that'd be my guess.

When I'm down blowing bubbles on a wreck at 90 feet in the Caribbean this winter, I'll thank our Prius for contributing to the money saved so we can afford it. And will think of it in Europe next summer, too. Hope we can rent a Prius over there!

Don't smoke, drink, live without all your expensive toys and drive a Prius and you too can come along! Each to his/her own.

Don't know what Blizzaks are, but we have studded snow tires and it doesn''t seem to matter with mileage.  A bit noisy, though.
For the rest of the retrogressive anti progressers - jealosy will get you nowhere.   Try as you might by badmouthing anything new, you can't stop progress, and all you do is demonstrate your own ignorance, using the I word in the true sense of the word,.   Yes, the hybrids will be history, once something better comes along (you guys'll badmouth it whatever it might be) and then something new, then........... Grow up guys!
Not saving the world 3X (your rhetoric is getting OLD and STALE) - just getting the most mileage out of my savings!  Simple as that!   Telloing it how it is - honestly!
Still no Pruis 5's available - there's a long waiting list all over the country.  Danged earthquake anyway.

Um, I think Mr. Ager is quite serious.  It appears they do better MPG's with old hippie math.

I am not saying you are an old hippie Bobkat, I am just saying old hippies tend to drive them and lie a lot.
