HELP w/ CANADIAN THISTLE

I seem to be getting a better crop of Canadian Thistle every year....  I dont like it.  Anyone have recommendations on what I could use to kill them (and hopefully the Dandelions too).  I dont have access to farmers or commercial products, so it would need to be something available at Fleet Farm or other big box stores.

2-4-D and spot spray them. I've got some and a spray tank if you need it.

Thistiles have a waxy coating on them that makes getting the chemical into the plant hard especially when the plant is small. What happens when they are sprayed to small is it simply burns the plant down but the feeder roots continue to grow.

I will mow around them or use a sponge and rubber gloves and apply the chemical to the back side of the leaf! This helps in getting the chemical into the root system.

If you have a large area you can let them grow up until they are a couple feet tall then cut them off about 4-6" above the ground. The stocks will be hollow at this point and if you keep the hollow stocks full of water it kills the plant and feeder roots as well. Cleaned up a large area of them at our old house where I could not spray by doing this. Hard to let them grow, but it works. We did this in our fields when I farmed, would walk in with a hand scythe and cut them down prior to a rain.
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape.Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

It may take years to get rid of both.   They are damn persistent and imho are kind of getting immune to the 2-4D.

make sure you get the extra strength crap that has dicamba in it, a little dicamba is better than a lot of 2 -4d

You should try to kill them in the fall with 24d or use some thing with the ai clopyralid like widematch to kill them now

Curtail does a better job with canadian thistle than 2-4D imo.

is this in a yrad or garden?  you can go to a local farm co op and buy stinger it will kill the thistle

Forefront works really good at killing all of your broadleafs in grass. Spray my pasture with it all the time works great.

Milestone does a great job with Thistle. There is a residual for the remaining summer as well. Can be tough on alfalfa if the thistle is mixed with other broadleafs.

Milestone is really good for thistle. Contact your county weed board; they usually have cost share programs. I work for a weed board in the summers and we use milestone on canadian thistle. It works especially well in the fall after the first frost as plants are sucking all the nutrients into their roots for the winter. If you're not going to graze it within a year there is a new chemical dupont came out with called perspective that will do a good job and not harm your grasses as well.

Seriously Tordon is a soil sterilizer that will prevent even grasses from growing for a long time. We used it on spots where we had leafy spurge as it was the recommended treatment. Even when not mixed to the level that was suggested it left dead spots for a number years. Not a product I would recommend in a lawn setting.

The biggest thing to remember with any chemical is volatility of the product or really at what temp it will vaporize and drift causing plants in other yards to die. So read the label well on whatever you chose. Using an adjutant that helps prevent drift is a good idea and will help in keeping the chemical in place for the plant to absorb.

Some people add a touch of dish soap to the solution to do this.
