What's a good calibre for prairie dogs?   I've been using my 243 with a 55 grain Winchester Silvertip and a 58 grain Hornady V-max, but they still seem to blow up pretty good.   Is there a little bullet that wouldn't do as much damage?

Half the fun is watching that red blob in the center of your scope.  Or see how high you can make them fly.  Flips are fun too.

I suppose he wants to have some stuffed and mounted, for his mantle. I have had good luck with the 17hmr with 20 grain bullets, at 100 yards or farther it doesnt do much damage.

When I had my #1 in 300 Winchester I was running 200 grain hotcore flat bases @ 3150... used that for prairie dogs from time to time... Hard bullet, yes.
But when youd connect on cranium..... holy hell did the stuff fly.

Pretty sure any bullet OTHER than the V-max will do less damage!

You mean since he can't get an elk to walk close enough to the road to shoot?

If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

I use a 17 fireball does not scare everything in the state when you touch it off and works real well out to 200yds also a 204 ruger can make red mist  a couple hundred yds farther. Man  a 300 they already have to many holes no use diggen more

If you want one to mount I believe the right caliber would be a gopher trap or coni bear

Whats the point to less damage?  I use a .243 with various reloaded ballistic tips and get anything from the red mist to the flippin chunks. Try Varmint Grenades I heard they do some real damage, and yes go to dogbegone.com and watch some of their video clips.
