Excuse my ignorance, but I have a question about this new incentive program to buy vehicles.

I have a 1997 Ford F150 that I am gettin rid of, was trying to sell private, but the thought of good financing, $4500 free money, and a new vehicle are intriguing.

Would upgrading from what  have fit the criteria?  Any other dealer incentives or special financing going on right now?

I guess my belief is I need to have a vehicle older than "X" year, with below "X" MPG; but I dont know the criteria.

Snow or others, any help or info for me?

YES, I am that foolish!

my understanding is that the older vehicle has to get 12 mpg or less I think and the new one has to get 22 mpg or higher.  I believe those were the numbers.  So if that's the case, a new pickup would be out of the question.  And I understand the dealer takes the money right off the top.

I checked into, Mark is right but you also must have owned the car for a year.

The Expedition will fit the requirements but I don't know about a pickup I never asked.
There are some good deals on some cars now but do a lot of looking.

Here is the information you need.  It gets a little confusing.  Your best deal may be to go to a dealership and see what they can do for you.

Just saw a Ford commercial they said upto $4500 govt plus $5000 cashback on F-150.
Most Ford,Dodge,Jeep & Chrysler all advertise cashback on top of the Govt program.

I hope your wife's expedition is worth less than $4.500. That government rebate doesn't allow for any trade in value because it requires that the vehicle being trded in is DESTROYED. It cannot be resold.

What an excellent way to get people who can't afford new car payments into a new car. It worked really well for the housing market. Not saying this won't work well for some, but it smells bad. I can only imagine that it will aid many Americans in expanding their personal debt. To be fair, it may also provide a nice boost for car companies (who are now owned by the government). Perhaps the government could subsidize credit cards for po' folks in order to get banks lending again.

How would I be reacting if this was Bush's idea? Good question.

here is the deal,1st go to "fueleconomy.gov" for the critera,as long as your truck gets less than 18mpg's per govornment spec's your good as long as your new truck or suv gets better than 2-4mpgs,then click on the "side-by-side' comparison,1st do your truck then click "compare",just fill in the year, make and engine size.

If all else fails shoot me a message and I'll do-it for ya.

The program is actually working quite well, its not the poor folks that are coming in,its folks making due with what they have,I'm seeing old beaters coming in that still run and most often are used for a 2nd or 3rd vehicle because they're not worth squat on trade, some folks take the $4500 and trade a 2nd vehicle in with equityplus take the huge rebates, hell I had a guy trade for a new p/u last saturday, traded his 2006 p/u in (clear title) and a beater van, plus $4800 to get a new truck. So,this won't last until November folks, its real money going fast, maybe weeks before its burned up,all 1billion dollars.

Snow! :)

I'm definetly getting rid of my ol' 88 Suburban hunting rig with this deal. I believe the site states 13.1 for an estimated MPG for this vehicle. Question is, Is there any trucks (full size/or smaller) that will qualify at 17.1 for the $3500 rebate being 4mpg over what i'm currently geting? (or do you have to get something with 22mpg or better?). I'm not commited to a truck or car actually, so I'm open to suggestions. (I'm going this week to speak with some dealers). Just wondering if a Hybrid Silverado Quad Cab isn't out of the picture.  Any input would be great! Thanks!

Big J,

Any of the cars will work for ya or a 2009 1/2ton in any body style 4x4 regular gas burner,if your sub is a 4x4 and has the 350v-8 your in cat #2 (under 15mpg's) the new trucks are more than the 2mpgs better so you'll get $4500 plus the bonus cash and rebates, another $4-5k while it lasts or the money runs out,I'm also dealing from GM supplier pricing this month, thats under dealer invoice,so you'll get around 10-11k off sticker, again depending on model.

So guys understand me.  I currently have a 1997 For F150 with 132k and an 04 Expedition Eddie Bauer with 58k; both are paid for.   Expo is primarily my wifes vehicle, but hasnt left the garage for over 4 months because my we also have a 1990 mazda POS p/u that can be parked in a shoebox, looks like hell, but my wife likes to drive (nickname is "the humbler").

My plan was to get rid of my 97 and take over daily use of the Expo for me.   I wonder if I could trade 2 clunkers for 1 new vehicle??  If so Id have 9k into a new vehicle, and wouldnt have left the lot yet.

I should have no problem with the new vehicle beating the old vehicles by 2-4 MPG.

Any dealer financing deals right now?  Other incenticves going on right now?

YES, I am that foolish!
